| How about a default tooltip with the caption, if the column is not wide enough to display it? |

This is a good suggestion - we can probably incorporate this - so that it works in a similar fashion to cell tooltips. If there is a tooltip explicitly set then this will always be displayed otherwise a tooltip with the column text will only be displayed if the text is truncated.
